ITCO launches tank container e-learning course

News December 8 / 2016    12:00 am

ITCO, the International Tank Container Organisation, has launched its first e-learning course.  The course provides measurable learning on the safe, competent and efficient use of tank containers, offering general awareness about the operation of portable tanks as prescribed by IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods). In addition, it gives users the knowledge to progress to function-specific training.  The course has been developed by ITCO and produced by Exis Technologies, a leader in online courses for the transport industry.

Heike Clausen, ITCO president, commented: “ITCO promotes tank containers as a safe, cost-efficient and flexible mode of transport. Through various publications and events we provide guidance to further increase the safe and competent handling of tank containers. I’m very proud that we can now offer a new information and education channel, ITCO’s first tank container e-learning course!”

Tank Container e-learning is intended for anyone involved in the tank container business, including shippers, operators, carriers, lessors, surveyors, depot service providers. It will be particularly relevant for:

  • Those with a direct responsibility in the operation or management of tank containers.  It provides a firm grounding in order to progress to more advanced training, either online or classroom based, to meet the specific functions of such roles.
  • Those who may not be directly involved with tank containers, but for whom general awareness about the operation of portable tanks may benefit both the individual and the company.

The course comprises four modules, as follows: a background to the tank container industry; components of the tank and their use; regulations appertaining to the tank; tank operations and depot services (including inspection, cleaning, repair and testing).

Each module is divided into elements that provide guidance on the different aspects of the safe operation of tank containers. Each element is designed to meet specific learning objectives and is maintained, so far as is applicable, in line with the latest IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) Amendment concerning the operation of portable tanks.

There are tests at the end of each element to ensure that a good understanding of the course content is being gained as the student progresses through it.  Students take the course at their own pace or within a set timeframe and can monitor their own progress as they proceed.  Element test scores build towards a final course completion score and a course completion certificate is automatically generated which can be printed out and kept as a record.

Courses can be set up on a course administrator system for in-house management of training on a local, regional or global basis.  The course administrator can configure courses, set pass marks and timeframes for completion and monitor progress.

The course is available as of today, 8 December 2016. The cost of the course is 100 GBP.  Further information and course purchasing is available here. *The internationally recognised collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning
