Containership DG fire could be largest insurance claim

Around midday Monday 20 March, off the coast of Yemen, an explosion in the stern deck cargo of the 5,551 teu Hyundai Fortune started a fire that rapidly spread forward, engulfing the accommodation block. The crew, one injured, were taken off by a Dutch destroyer. The suspected source of the blaze was a container stack of fireworks loaded in Hong Kong and destined for Hamburg and Le Havre. At Saturday 25 March the fire was still burning strongly, with Wijsmuller salvage vessels attending.

If eventually declared a total loss, the Hyundai Fortune could be the largest containership claim. The cargo claim could total $100m and the hull $40m. Determining what happened and where fault lies may be a long process. As in the Hanjin Pennsylvania fire, fireworks may have fuelled the blaze but the cause may be elsewhere.

The incident coincides with the UK P&I Club initiative drawing attention to the rising losses attributable to containerised dangerous cargo and the varying standards of competence of shore side staff involved in consigning and packing containers.
