posted hazcheck.com 8th June 2006 22nd May Japan: Tokyo Bay Three crew members aboard the chemical tanker Shuho Maru died of chemical poisoning while cleaning a tank that had been carrying benzene. The 263-ton Shuho Maru was some 1.2 km east of Haneda airport when the coast guard received a message from the tanker just before 14:00 that one crew member had fallen down on the deck and the other two had collapsed inside the tank. A Japan Coast Guard official said four crew members were aboard the tanker and the three who died are the ship's captain, his son, and his brother. The fourth crew member, also a relative, was safe. The tanker, operated by a shipping firm in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, had unloaded 500 tons of benzene at a Sumitomo Chemical Co. factory in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture, and was on its way to Yokohama when the crew members were overcome by the fumes.
